The Joys of Painting
This semester’s theme is the popular Bob Ross television show “The Joys of Painting. Each project in some way or another will be tied to this theme. The weekly projects will be posted on the main page as they (in my opinion are the main attraction) and this page will be the detailed updates on progress of these projects through the weeks.
Week of 08/22-29
This week was the first week of class and we needed to build the foundation for our semester. In doing so after registering for the class we signed up for discord and joined the DS106 chat room which after introducing ourselves connected us with not only our class but another class of students. We were then tasked with creating a personal website to post these very updates too. After a few more registration process’ on websites like gravatar and various social medias we were prepared for our first project. Watching and reviewing an episode of The Joy Painting. Though I had seen episodes in the past every episode has it’s own uniqueness. After my attempt at writing a review i was able to call it a wrap on my first week of my first college class.
Week of 08/30-09/05
Phew, this week was bit of chaos. But I can’t say I didn’t enjoy the photoshop experience or the media exposure. This week was chocked full of photoshop attempts for me through the DS106 assignments and creativity challenges. From a war poster to a giant koala I got very familiarized with the tool as I hoped I would. Then moving on to the writing assignments reading about Kleon’s help on how to turn urself into a product and sell online was bringing out the visionary in me while reviewing his work. Lastly the basis of copy rite brought up a few moral questions for me while watching “Rip! A ReMix Manifesto” and critically evaluating the question of what should decide when copy rite is applied.
Week of 09/06-12
Labor day week, a week of understanding what it means to work. I gave my imagination a working over with the writing projects from the ds106 assignments. Some fears and some philosophical and a lot of wishing I knew how to write better stories. This week I wrote “Amounting to me” “The Untimely Demise” and “The Bird Who Shouldn’t fly”. I also watched an interesting video on the shape of stories and the control the web is developing upon society and recorded my thoughts in “Speaking in Sights”. I wrote about the dynamic of stories and how they are applied or repeated to the most popular stories written. Finally three chuckle worthy daily creates some shoes, a bus, and a relatable tweet. With that it’s a wrap on this week, all in all I’m enjoying testing different sides of my brain through the weeks.
Week of 09/13-19
This was an interesting week. I started off realizing the website needed a complete redesign due to the overflow of filler information. That in combination with day to day life has me writing this rite at the end of a busy week. Starting off with a look at photography’s grip on day to day society in “The Camera Captures” evaluating both how photography has changed and society’s use of it changing. Then a look at a renown photographer and his work in “The Celtic“. Following the dreams of some students I took a look at how to become a photographer myself and their tips and tricks, and giving them a shot in “Attempts“. Lastly two visual assignments with “Redundancy Repeated” and “Double Up“, and three daily creates : “Ads“, “Signaling Signs“, and “A Magnificent Manifesto“. After the fourth week my first month is down, though it may be a little messy due to the current construction on the site but this is going to be something I will be proud of.
Week of 09/20-27
This week was fairly short and sweet but man was it cool. I made a very creepy audio mix for my audio assignment “Eerily Ear” all while listening to an interesting story on the rooted society of plants in a radio lab from a New York radio station. After listening to it I wrote my thoughts on their techniques and processes to make the listening experience in “Retaining the Radio Lab”. After three daily creates in “Daily’s Done pt 1” that’s a wrap on this week.
Week of 09/28- 08/03
Design week baby, my playground. This week I read up on a lot of cool design elements the actual art of well….art. I showed my thoughts in “Domestic Design”. Then a few daily creates to try out my walking legs with the knew knowledge, I made “Vengeful VANS” and “Johnathan”. Then three more daily creates with “Daily’s Done pt 2” I wrapped up a fun week.
Week of 10/11
This week we started our Radio Project! After a shaky start to the week trying to figure out who to work with, our entire class decided to collaborate together. Not much progress other than a bit of planning out what to do has been completed but we’re making headway. After doing 8 stars of audio assignments with “The Abominable Ad” and “” I did 1 daily create in “Speaking Spoken”.
Week of 10/18
This week we finished our radio project. It was an interesting process for me deciding what i should include and where. It was a difficult learning curve as well forcing me to understand different factors that go into audio design such as background noise. I had a personal issue with what sounded like a constant breeze in the background while recording my story. Speaking of which my story was made up on the spot. I took a couple of takes when I drew a blank but it legitimately was on the spot and I’m quite proud of it. I also did the intro to our podcast with some cool sounding intro noises and editing that went above and beyond what was necessary. After a tiring week I opted for a single daily create in “Lucky Lucky Lucky”
